Don’t Panic…. The Finalist Fair is coming!

Are you graduating this Summer?

The news in April that unemployment increased was an unwelcome reminder that the UK’s economic recovery continues to be tough.

For anyone leaving University this year, such news will be a stark reminder that finding a graduate job looks to be even tougher for the class of 2013. These figures don’t tell the whole story though. And for students entering the job market this summer, it’s important to bear in mind some other headlines that made the news last month:

Graduate employers plan to increase the number of roles they offer. Two of separate surveys confirmed graduate employers expected to increase the number of vacancies they offered in 2013. High Flyers (see here) and the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) both highlighted the increase, with the AGR’s survey suggesting the increase could be as big as 9% (see here)

More than a quarter of jobs are now available only to graduates.[1]The number of jobs in the UK requiring a degree has overtaken the total of posts not needing any qualifications.

The picture for graduate employment isn’t the same nationally.[2] The Higher Education Careers Services Unit’s deputy director of research, Charlie Ball, said: “London has been consistently the most common first employment destination for new graduates, but had seen a relative decline in share of employment before the recession. Since then London’s share has increased and continues to rise.”

Employers can’t fill their graduate schemes.[3]It might sound unthinkable but 30% of AGR member organisations did not meet their graduate recruitment targets despite record numbers of applications. And with hundreds of vacancies still being advertised by employers, this year looks set to be the same.

Although this is welcome news, with an estimated 400,000 graduates expected to enter the job market this summer, the competition for graduate jobs be tough. That’s why we’re giving YOU a head-start.

Wednesday June 12th will see the University of Leicester hosting its first ever Finalist Fair. Designed for anyone graduating this summer, Graduate employers from across the UK will be coming to campus to promote the vacancies they still have on their graduate schemes. More importantly though these are roles you can secure this summer!

Wednesday May 8th see’s the official launch of the Finalist Fair website so come back next week to see which employers are coming, what the benefits are and, most importantly, how you can prepare.

For the 4th year running, the University of Leicester had the fantastic opportunity to host 19 exchange students from Meiji Gakuin University in Japan last month.

Students were eager to get involved with the local community and were able to participate in a range of volunteering activities around Leicester with the support of University of Leicester student volunteers and the Career Development Service.

The first activity saw the students get their hands dirty on two different environmental projects - 10 students planted vegetables at the Saffron Acres Community Allotment Project, whilst the other 9 helped the Riverside Rangers with a habitat project.

The next stop on their busy schedule, the following week, was to teach Origami and Japanese writing at two local Age UK day care centres. The students were very warmly welcomed and patiently taught their skills to the day care centre users who were extremely grateful to them for sharing their expertise and enjoyed learning about Japanese culture.

The following week, the Japanese students had a taste of classroom life at two local schools Sparkenhoe and St Thomas More Catholic Primary Schools. Armed with supplies, the exchange students showed 210 young children how to play Japanese games, taught them about Japanese culture and how to make origami. The pupils soon mastered the art of creating origami dogs, hearts, ducks, cranes and paper planes!

All those involved had a fantastic time and it was a great chance to not only host the Japanese students but also for them to engage with the local community alongside Leicester students. “The students very much enjoyed the volunteering activities, in particular the school visits, which provided them with the opportunity to communicate with local people as well as other University students. This meant that they had the chance to practice their spoken English, as well as being able to contribute to the local community.” – Clare Mytton, International Officer. The exchange visit was organised by the International Office as part of the British Study Programme and the volunteering activities were organised by the Career Development Service’s Volunteering Team.
