Spin Doctoring in Rational Drug Discovery and Design

The discovery and development of new therapeutics will become increasingly dependent on the use of rational, knowledge-based approaches, in which detailed understanding of the structural features and properties of targeted proteins or protein complexes will play a central role, together with precise information on the binding sites and modes of interaction for novel pharmaceutical leads. The seminar will discuss the potential impact of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy-based approaches on knowledge-based drug discovery, with examples given of its application to the identification and optimisation of potential small molecule drugs, as well as illustrations of its increasing importance in the development of therapeutic antibodies.
