Overview

Delivered in association with the Media Zoo and the David Wilson Library, this series of three workshops explores what it means to be a researcher in the digital world of Web 2.0.

The social web – a collective term for social media such as Flickr, Wikipedia, Twitter, discussion forums, Facebook and others – throws up new opportunities but also new challenges for researchers. This course will offer pointers in how to understand, work with and navigate this new environment.

Part 1 focuses on tools for presenting and sharing research.

This course runs for 2.5 hours

What will I get out of this course? 

You will gain a better understanding of the terminology and tools of the social web, as well as the ways in which it can help research output and in some cases improve its quality.

Presenting and sharing research is an important part of an academic’s job. After you have been introduced to the evidence base of social web use in HE, you will be shown how to create files in popular technologies such as Slideshare, ScreenR, Prezi and podcasting.

You will leave with the capacity to start integrating these technologies immediately into your work.

Who is it for?

Academic and research staff and PhD candidates from any discipline and any stage of career.

Participant preparation needed?

Participants will be required to complete an online survey about  individual use of social media one week prior to the face-to-face workshop.

No prior experience of the social web is required.
