British developments in mining to be discussed at international conference

Professor Jenkin gave an invited keynote lecture last month in Peru

Professor Gawen Jenkin from the Department of Geology has been invited to Peru in September in order to discuss major British developments in mining and processing.

The invitation follows a recent visit to Peru by Professor Jenkin, who gave an invited keynote lecture last month on ‘Clean alternatives to the use of mercury and cyanide in gold metallurgy using ionic liquids’ at the 1st International Congress “Progress and alternatives in the application of clean technologies in the metallurgy of gold” at the National University San Agustin, Arequipa - the only speaker from the UK.

Professor Jenkin also used his time in Peru to have meetings with mining companies Minera Titan del Peru and Poderosa, as well as the Vice Minister of Mines.

He also visited the giant Cerro Verde copper mine – one of the biggest mines in the world.

Professor Jenkin has been invited to return to Peru in September by Poderosa and the DIT (Department for International Trade) to talk at PERUMIN, ‘The biggest mining fair in the world’, where he will be one of 3 keynote speakers at the British International Forum showcasing British developments in mining and processing and will also speak at the technical session.
