Congratulations to Mariam Khan who won her seat in yesterday’s local elections.

While other final year students are cramming for exams and searching for jobs, Mariam Khan in our Department of Economics knows exactly what she’s going to do after University. Last night she was elected to Birmingham City Council as Councillor for Washwood Heath.

Mariam, who stood for Labour, polled 80% of the votes in the ward, beating her own uncle who was standing for the LibDems. She was born and raised in Washwood Heath and has been a voluntary youth worker in the city for the past seven years.

At just 21, she becomes almost certainly the youngest Councillor in Birmingham’s history and one of the youngest in the UK.
