Professor Dame Julia Higgins presents the award to Dr Heaphy and Dr Pawluczyk

Dr Shaun Heaphy and Dr Izabella Pawluczyk from our Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation were in Birmingham last week to receive a Bronze Athena SWAN Department Award on behalf of the department.

Athena SWAN (Scientific Women’s Academic Network) is a charter which “recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.” It awards bronze, silver and (very occasionally) gold awards to universities and individual departments.

The Department of III presented a 39-page document last November detailing the gender balance among undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and senior management and demonstrating the steps that the department was taking to reduce inequalities.

The University of Leicester as a whole also holds a Bronze Athena SWAN Award which was initially granted in 2009 and has now been renewed for another three years.

Athena SWAN patron Professor Dame Julia Higgins FRS from Imperial College London presented the awards at a ceremony at the University of Birmingham.
