Pro-Vice-Chancellor provides launch lecture for exhibition
You might already be familiar with Ala Bashir’s work - in 2010 Embrace Arts held the first significant UK exhibition of his paintings. Curated by Stella Couloutbantis and the catalogue edited by Professor Tallack, it showcased the work of, arguably, Iraq's greatest living artist.
Two years later, Professor Tallack, who is Head of our College of Arts, Humanities and Law, has delivered a lecture in Doha to accompany the opening of the new exhibition by Dr Bashir on the theme of 'chairs'. The catalogue also includes an essay by Professor Tallack entitled 'Repetition and Difference: Ala Bashir's Memories of Chairs'.
While at the opening, Professor Tallack was also interviewed by Al Jazeera evening television news and for the Al Jazeera Arabic newspaper.
Dr Bashir escaped from Iraq in 2003 and today he lives just outside of Nottingham. He exhibits all over the world and is a champion for the healing power of art in overcoming the horrors of war.
