Triple award success for University researchers
Dr Will Nicolson, Clinical Research Fellow at the Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit, won a prestigious Young Investigator Prize at the annual Heart Rhythm Congress 2011. This is the third year in a row that a member of the same research team, led by Dr Andre Ng, has won such a prize. It's also a hat-trick for Dr Nicolson personally, having won a Young Investigators’ Award at CardioRhythm in Hong Kong in February and the East Midlands Engineering and Science Professionals Master’s Prize in May.
Dr Nicolson works under the supervision of Dr Ng to research sudden cardiac death. Dr Ng has spent over a decade researching this area, and has come up with a new way of identifying patients at risk of lethal heart rhythm disturbances. His LifeMap project can detect early signs of potentially fatal arrhythmias, meaning patients can receive life-saving treatment. The LifeMap project has recently won a Design Council Award.
