Poetry, politics and power chords: it's Widdebintasabian Day in Leicester!

Please note that both the lecture and the gig are completely sold out.

Who were those people queuing on campus at 9.30 this morning? Perhaps they were eager Ann Widdecombe fans desperate for a front row seat at tonight’s lecture. Or maybe they’re keen on dub poetry and desperate not to miss Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze’s reading this evening.

It’s more likely that those were the 50 lucky students who bagged a ticket (via Facebook) for Kasabian’s lunchtime session today in the Students’ Union’s basement Scholar Bar. You’ll be able to hear the Leicester lads rocking out on today's Fearne Cotton show which is broadcast between 10.00am and 12.45pm. The 'Live Lounge' session will start at about 11.30am – and you can watch it live on your telly’s Red Button!

Unable to get a ticket to see their favourite former Home Secretary, these students consoled themselves with an exclusive session by a local rock band. (Click for larger version.)

Then this evening you’ll be able to hear them again on stage in the O2 Academy Leicester on Zane Lowe’s show which runs from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The gig kicks off at 7.00pm sharp, doors open 6.30pm but please note that if you haven’t already got a ticket you stand absolutely no chance of getting in whatsoever. There will be no returns and the lucky 1,400 or so fans have individual wristbands which they are picking up at midday by showing ID at the box office so if anyone tries to flog you a ‘spare ticket’ - save your money.

Ms Widdecombe’s public lecture on ‘Faith and Politics’ at 5.30pm is similarly sold out although it won’t be broadcast on the radio. This takes place in the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre in the Fielding Johnson Building South Wing and there’s no wristband system in place but we do ask you to please bring a print-out of the acknowledgement e-mail you received when you applied for tickets.

And there are still places available to see internationally acclaimed poet Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze in performance and conversation in the Attenborough Film Theatre at 6.30pm. Poetry is for everyone so there’s no wristbands, no e-mails, just turn up and enjoy the rhymes and the rhythms of world class dub poetry.

Something for everyone at the University of Leicester this evening!
