The University received outstanding national radio coverage this week as the subject of a special report by Gillian Hargreaves on the BBC’s Today programme (24 June), which featured interviews with the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of Corporate Affairs Richard Taylor, and several students.
New research by Professor Jo Brewis in our School of Management, investigating a fascination with ‘chav’ culture amongst middle-class gay men, received a plethora of coverage internationally. The story was covered by The Metro (21 June), Insider Media (24 June), Zee News (21 June), HealthCanal.com (21 June), and DailyIndia.com (21 June), amongst many others.
A Leicester-led study that has claimed that GPs are struggling to spot early dementia was also popular with media online, MedIndia (22 June), Science Daily (20 June), Barchester Healthcare (21 June), Mediplacements (20 June), amongst other outlets. It was also featured on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours (29 June) and BBC Radio Leicester (29 June).
A project presented at the Postgraduate Research Festival, into a potential replacement for electric car batteries, continued to generate media interest across the world: Automotive World (20 June), TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk (21 June), Balkans.com Business News (21 June), Autos.ca (21 June) and Global Insight (20 June) all ran the story.
Pc Harvey Watson, who is to receive an honorary degree from the University and whose beat includes the campus and its students, had a full-page interview in the Leicester Mercury (25 June). The Leicester Mercury (23 June) highlighted the latest discovery at the Burrough Hill archaeological excavations with a substantial picture story.
Head of Marketing Communications at the University Helen Pennack was quoted extensively in The Guardian (20 June) on universities using social media for marketing purposes.
Professor Panicos Demetriades of the Department of Economics contributed an opinion piece to Euromoney (22 June) on Greece’s economic state. He also gave an interview to BBC Radio Leicester’s (24 June, 5pm) Martin Ballard on the same topic.
Dr John Bridges of the Space Research Centre was interviewed about the Nakhlite martian meteorite on BBC Radio 4's Frontiers (29 June) programme.
