Honorary Graduates 2011 no.2 - Carole Blackburn
Carole Blackburn was born and raised in Leicester and has lived in Knighton for more than 30 years, during which time she has played a role in so many voluntary/community projects and organisations that it’s difficult to know where to begin.
When she’s not busy chairing the Welford Road Police and Community Support Group, Carol sits on the Saffron Lane Community Management Board, the NHS ‘Get Involved’ team, and the Leicester Fire and Rescue Forum. She also represents Age Concern through the Leicester Partnership and she’s a member of the University Community Liaison Committee too.
Among the initiatives Carole has introduced to Leicester are:
- Cold Calling Zones aimed at preventing elderly and vulnerable people becoming victims of distraction burglary.
- School Watch and Church Watch, involving local residents in reducing crime and antisocial behaviour around these buildings.
- 100% best attendance award in Leicester schools with prizes to deter truancy.
Carole has received numerous awards and commendations for her extensive community work from the Home Office, Leicester City Council, the Chief Constable of Leicestershire and others, and can now add to that list an Honorary Degree from the University of Leicester.
