Geography student Amita Bhakta received a special award for her environmental contribution across Leicester.
She was honoured for the 'Best Environmental Contribution by a Young Person' at the annual Leicester Green Life Awards which took place recently.
Prestigious Green Life Awards celebrate individuals and organisations who work hard to improve the city’s sustainability and environmental standards. Managed by Leicester’s Environment Partnership Board, the awards distinguish environmental contributions over the previous year.
Amita’s achievements and work during the time period include:
- Active member of the University’s Environment Team and involvement with the University’s environmental campaigns
- Helping the Department of Geography to achieve gold standard in the Green Impact Awards
- Environmental correspondent for the Students’ Union magazine, The Ripple
- Volunteering for environmental organisation Groundwork UK during summer holidays to maintain the nature reserves of Leicester parks
Quoted on the Departmental website, Amita said:
It is such a wonderful honour to be recognised for the environmental work I have done over the past year within the University and for other organisations, I did not expect to gain such a high profile of recognition at this early stage of my environmental volunteering career. I must say I am indebted to the endless support and encouragement provided to me by all of the staff of the Geography department and the Environment team, who have inspired me so much in my passionate efforts to create positive change for the environment and to create a sustainable University, a sustainable city of Leicester, and a sustainable future for the world as a whole."
