Messing about on the river

In the first of what is hoped to be many such competitions, the Boat Clubs from Leicester and De Montfort universities will be going head-to-head on 17 April in the annual Leicester Regatta on the Grand Union Canal.

The De Montfort team may feel confident after seeing this first photograph of a Leicester University student in 1963.

The makeshift craft and its crew were taking part in the raft race in Abbey Park during Rag Week that year. He was the eventual winner and received a keg of beer for his efforts.

However, you should expect to see an altogether more professional display from the University of Leicester Boat Club on Sunday at 12.30pm.

Pictured is John Denton, who also appears in the photograph to the left. This photo was taken in 1963 during the Thames Tideway Head of the River Race, an annual processional rowing race on the River Thames on the 4.25 mile Championship Course from Mortlake to Putney.

Pictured in this photograph are: Mick White (bow), Geoff Cope, Alex Conyers, Barry Wilkinson, John Denton, John Comfort, Mick Atkinson, Ron Wyatt, and Geoff Hayward (cox).

Both photographs were sent to the University of Leicester by former student Dee Dealtrey, courtesy of John Denton, who at the time lived in Salisbury Hall and was a member of the University of Leicester Boat Club.
