The O2 Academy Leicester officially opens its doors tonight with a concert by Professor Green, top British rapper and leading academic in our Department of Getting Down with the Kids.

Professor Green will have a full live band on stage with him in the newly refurbished Students' Union and will have support from rising stars Envy and Ironik.

Tuesday saw a very successful gig by Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly in O2 Academy2, the medium-sized venue formerly known as Queen’s Hall, but tonight is the official launch night for the large (1,450 capacity) O2 Academy venue. There is also an intimate O2 Academy3 venue elsewhere in the building. BBC Leicester has a slideshow of photos from inside the venue.

Tomorrow you can put on your rocking trousers for a gig in O2 Academy2 by The Union, a collaboration between ex-Thunder guitarist Luke Morley and ex-Winterville singer/guitarist Peter Shoulder. Next week sees O2 Academy3 hosting Philadelphia Grand Jury on Tuesday and the Jim Jones Revue on Wednesday.

Local bands get the chance to shine at Chess-Club in O2 Academy3 on Saturday 2 October where you can catch Leicester’s own The Chairmen and Autohype. The first gig of term will be The Magic Numbers on Monday 4 October.
