Collecting your loans

Books, and bound volumes including theses

When your item arrives we will contact you to say it is ready for collection. Please collect it from the David Wilson Library reception desk in person, bringing your library card with you. Rarely material is supplied as a microform, for which the Help Zone can provide assistance in using.

We cannot post out books that have been received from another library to Distance Learning students. We can provide you with a photocopy of their contents pages.  From this you can choose a portion of the book (1 chapter/5% whichever is greater) to be supplied as a postal photocopy.

All items are issued subject to early recall by the lending library. If this happens we will contact you.

Library use only items

Please be aware that some items maybe restricted to library use only and may not be taken out of the building. Generally this only applies to older or rare items, although on occasion some specialist libraries restrict all their items that are loaned. Restriction are applied by the lending library and we must abide by them. Items that are available on microform are usually only for use in the library only.

Substantial fines are charged on all uncollected items and your use of library facilities may also be restricted. If you no longer require an item, please notify the Library as soon as possible.

Photocopies

Photocopies are sent to the primary address we have on your library record. These do not need to be returned. You may find it preferable to request articles as electronic document, which will be delivered via email much faster. However, this is only normally available for items supplied by the British Library.

Distance Learnering students are normally supplied photocopies, unless they specifically request electronic format documents.

Returning or renewing loaned items

Please return loans by the due date to the David Wilson Library. Please do not remove the issue slip, as this may delay its return to the lending library. Fines are charged on overdue Loans and use of the library facilities may also be restricted.

Items on loan from other libraries may sometimes be renewed, but this is not always possible. Each loan renewal will deduct another point from your annual quota.

If you wish to possibly renew an item you must contact Document Supply staff well before the due date. We will then approach the lending library and enquire if a renewal is possible. If you wait until the due date for return, it may not be possible to renew the item in time.

Due to the roll out of the British Library's enhanced inter-lending service all books borrowed before May 2012 cannot be renewed and must be returned on or before their due date. If you still require a copy of an item for longer, please return it and submit a new ILL request as normal. We apologise for this inconvenience, which is a nationally applied British Library policy across all University libraries. All items requested from the British Library on or after 1st May 2012 are available for possible renewals as normal. Items on loan from other libraries are unaffected.
