Check your eligibility

Before you apply check who can use the Library. You can choose to have a reference card (for access to the Library) or can request a borrowing card (fees may apply).

If you are applying via one of the national academic library access schemes, you will also need your completed and validated application form and valid Library card from your home library.

Please note that all members and visitors are required to abide by the Library Regulations and all personal information we receive complies with the University Data Protection Statement.

Apply online

Check the information on Library membership before you apply. You can choose to have a reference card (for access to the Library) or can request a borrowing card (fees may apply).

Complete our online form to submit an application for membership. You will be informed by email within 2 working days as to whether your application has been successful and when you will be able to collect your Library card in person. We will also advise you of the photographs, proof of ID and any additional documents you will need to bring with you.

Make your application in person during staffed opening hours

Bring proof of ID and two passport photographs with you. If your application is successful your Library card will be available for collection within 2 working days. You will be able to enter the Library as soon as your application has been accepted on a visitors card.

Valid Proof of ID

We ask everyone who wishes to join the Library, and who is not a member of the University, to supply one document showing your name and current UK address and a form of ID with date of birth. You will also need to provide 2 passport-sized photographs for your card; these should be in colour and sized 4.5cm by 3.5cm without distortion.

The following documents are accepted as proof of identification:

  • Driver's Licence
  • Utility bill e.g. gas, electricity, telephone bill
  • Rentbook or Council Tax Statement
  • Bank or Building Society statement

Plus if you are applying for membership by way of one of the reciprocal access schemes you also need:

  • Your completed and validated application form/cards from your home library

And

  • Your current Library/University/College card from your home institution

If you are applying for membership via the NHS you also need your valid NHS ID.
