Fixed term contracts
Contract research staff and other staff on fixed-term contracts have the least job security in the sector, and usually have inferior terms and conditions to their permanent colleagues. New legislation, long campaigned for by the UCU, should help to bring some protection for staff in the future. But there is still much work to be done. We are campaigning hard to end the use of fixed-term contract.
What is the UCU doing about this?

The Union has a sub-committee that is examing the use of contact research staff by the University of Leicester. The CRS sub-committee currently has 8 members who are actively engaged in raising awareness about the issues facing CRS at Leicester. All the members are CRS themselves.
The group conducted a survey of all contract research staff last year and will continue to push for improvements in the ways CRS are treated, and further consultation with CRS will take place this autumn. We are always keen to hear the views of CRS at Leicester. Contact Paul Sinfield to find out more about the UCU contract research staff sub-committee.
