Important

In keeping with legislation and the University's smoking policy smoking is not permitted in the Common Room at any time.

Members are asked not to use mobile phones in the lounges and dining areas.

Facilities

The fifth floor of the Charles Wilson Building is given over entirely to the Senior Common Room. One of its attractions is the wide views across city and county in all directions.

Catering

The main dining area is on the west (city) side of the Common Room, where there is a daily changing menu of hot meals, salads,  desserts and coffee. On the east (Victoria Park) side is the bar - which also serves light meals and snacks, as well as morning tea and coffee - and the lounge. Daily papers and periodicals are available here. The bar is also open on Friday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.00pm (except August).

The Garendon Restaurant on the fourth floor offers a carvery-style menu with waitress service (booking through Catering Service is recommended), and there are other function rooms on the fourth floor which may be booked as private dining rooms.

Newspapers and Periodicals

An excellent range of newspapers and periodicals is available to be read in the SCR, funded by members' subscriptions.  After they have been finished with, these newspapers and periodicals are offered for purchase through an annual auction and will be delivered to the successful bidder via the internal mail (the day after for newspapers, or the following week or month for periodicals). For the benefit of all members, and for the sake of those who have paid to receive the papers 'second hand' in the auction, members are requested not to remove, borrow or deface issues. Enquiries concerning newspapers and periodicals should be addressed to the Secretary.

Television

A television set is provided for use by members only and is situated in the Park Side Lounge on the fifth floor. A snooker table is available in the bar on the fifth floor for SCR members and their guests to use. Please ensure that the equipment and snooker balls are securely put away after use.

Sports

Badminton is played in the Manor Road Sports Hall on Friday evenings. Squash courts are situated in Princess Road for which bookings may be made at the courts. See Clubs and Societies below for these and other sporting activities.

Notices

Members are welcome to use the SCR notice board on the main 5th floor landing to advertise events or for private notices (accommodation, sales etc). Please do not use a large poster where a small one will do, and mark any notice with the date on which it is first displayed. Undated notices are liable to be taken down early. Notices will normally be removed after about a month, but the SCR reserves the right to remove notices at any time.
