Senior Common Room

Senior Common Room The Senior Common Room (SCR) is the social organisation for all academic and equivalent staff.

It is one of the assets of the University that staff from so many different departments are able to meet up in one conveniently located Common Room.

Our facilities are mainly on the fifth floor of the Charles Wilson Building, where our lounges, bar and dining rooms provide an opportunity to relax and meet colleagues from your own and other departments. There is a wide range of newspapers and magazines, and a number of active clubs and societies. The SCR Committee welcomes suggestions for new activities and hopes that as many members as possible will use the Common Room and take part in events.

Membership

Senior Common RoomMembership of the Common Room is open to all full-time members of staff Grade 6 and above. Those who hold appointments for one session only can be elected upon nomination by five members. Members of staff other than the above may be elected as associate members at a General Meeting on nomination by five members. In case of doubt please consult the Secretary. Membership of the Common Room is not open to postgraduate and undergraduate students, though postgraduate students may be entertained as guests of members in the bar. Members of staff who are not automatically members are welcome to apply for Associate Membership at the same subscription rate as SCR members (currently £12 p.a. see below). For more information, contact the Secretary.

The current subscription is £12 p.a. which is deducted at a rate of £1 monthly from members' salaries. Members not paid directly by the University will be billed individually. The subscription is fixed each year at the AGM. Subscriptions finance such facilities as newspapers and periodicals,  television, snooker, football and other sporting activities. Staff who do not wish to be a member of the Common Room should contact the Secretary who will arrange the cancellation of the salary deduction.

Hours of Opening

The Common Room is normally open whenever the Charles Wilson Building is open.

At present the hours, for both term-time and vacation, are:

Monday to Friday 8.00am-6.00pm (Friday evening bar 5.00pm-7.00pm except August)
Saturday Normally Closed
Sunday Closed

Please note that the Common Room may be booked for private functions, especially at weekends. The Catering Manager consults the Chairman when taking function bookings which may impinge on normal SCR hours.

Extensions to opening hours may be arranged with the Booking Section, Catering, tel: 2212.

Suggestions

Senior Common RoomMembers' suggestions for improving the existing facilities are welcome. These should be e-mailed to the Secretary who will pass them on to the Catering Department.

The SCR Committee thinks it is particularly important that members should communicate matters relating to catering service through the SCR Committee and not by direct comment to the staff themselves.

A comment/suggestions book is available from the Staff on the 5th Floor for immediate feedback concerning minor catering problems.
