Since 2004, Leicester students have been documenting their own slang for a third year module in the School of English. Each student has designed a website and put their glossaries online.
Some of the glossaries are universally available, others can be accessed only on campus. This talk will consider changes in students’ reported informal spoken English in the last eight years and explore the origins of student slang.
It will include a countdown of the module’s top 20 slang terms, which are guaranteed, between them, to offend more or less everyone (so please don’t come if you can’t take a bit of offending).
Julie Coleman’s research interests lie in the history of the English Language, particularly the history of the lexis and the slang.
