Alice Oswald is a poet whose sharply observant and warmly imaginative engagement with the natural world has won her a wide readership and many awards. She has published five collections, the best known probably being Dart (winner of the 2002 TS Eliot Prize), an extended work in verse and prose celebrating the life and culture of the River Dart in Devon where she lives and works as a gardener.
Her latest collection, Weeds and Wild Flowers (2009), received the inaugural Ted Hughes Award for new work in poetry. "What’s startling is the sheer bravura, the idiosyncrasy, the uniqueness of the work," Tim Supple, one of the judges, commented. "It’s extremely rooted and almost unfashionably English and rural, and is something that is very right for a Ted Hughes Award."
