The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger is sixty years old in 2011. Still one of the best-loved American novels of the twentieth century, it has also attracted controversy for its depiction of the teenage Holden Caulfield, who expresses his hatred of the adult world of ‘phonies’ as he roams Manhattan, drunk and desolate.
This talk will consider why Holden and his misadventures became and remain so popular; it will also show how the novel has influenced innumerable depictions of adolescent rebellion in post-war fiction and film.
Sarah Graham lectures in American literature at the University of Leicester and has a particular interest in representations of adolescence. She has published two studies of The Catcher in the Rye and is currently writing a book about Salinger’s short fiction
