Dr Michael Steiner is a consultant respiratory physician at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. He trained in London at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School and went on to specialist training in respiratory medicine in Nottingham. He undertook a higher research degree in Leicester in the field of nutrition and pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD. He provides specialist care for a wide range of respiratory conditions with specialist interests that include COPD, lung volume reduction surgery and home ventilation.
Dr Steiner is a leading member of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Research Group at Glenfield Hospital. His research interests include chronic care for patients with COPD and other chronic lung diseases with particular expertise in exercise performance, physical training, rehabilitation, nutrition and skeletal muscle dysfunction in COPD.
Dr Steiner leads the rehabilitation theme of the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland CLAHRC (Collaboration for leadership in Applied Health Research and Care). This is a department of health research grant awarded in 2008 to the health organisations in the LNR region (www.le.ac.uk/sm/research/lnrclahrc/). He is deputy lead for Workpackage 4 (exercise and skeletal muscle) of the MRC/ABPI COPD national consortium (COPD MAP) established in 2011.
