Research Institutes

These institutes are an integral part of the Discovery-led Research strand of the University’s Strategic Plan, unveiled in September 2015 by the President and Vice-Chancellor.

Our commitment to discovery is about imaginative new thinking and understanding of the world around us.  These new institutes will bring a renewed focus on our strengths and will bring together colleagues from across the university to grapple with fundamental questions that arise at the intersection of different disciplines. They will drive our global research excellence and will be a key part of our commitment to pioneer a distinctive elite of research-intensive institutions.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Boyle
The University’s new research strategy is all about developing a healthy ecosystem for research. Where excellent research goes on at the University of Leicester, it will thrive and grow.  We want to use the institutes as beacons of excellence to coalesce and catalyse excellent research.
Professor Iain Gillespie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise
Leicester needs to be about excellence and impact where we can achieve it. We offer scholarship across a whole range of disciplines and we want to celebrate and enable that. No university can be equally good at everything. We are particularly good at the things we are establishing the institutes around.
Professor Paul Monks, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and Engineering
