Referendum

Ensuring that the Students' Union complies with the 2006 Charities Act

The 2006 Charities Act will compel the Students' Union to register as a charity by October 2009. This will require us to introduce a new structure to meet the requirements of becoming a charity.

In becoming a charity the union should adopt the best practice of the charity sector which would include the creation of a Board of Trustees and the addition of new external trustees.

None of these changes are likely to result in any fundamental changes to services that you receive from the Union nor the way in which you as students interact with the union through the democratic structures.

"Do you agree that the Union's Executive Committee and the Council shall be empowered to take whatever steps are necessary to amend the constitution of the Students' Union to implement the changes required by the Charities Act 2006?"

Voting takes place on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March 2009.

The University of Leicester does not necessarily adopt or endorse content supplied by the Students' Union. The University retains its right to enforce the legal and regulatory rules already in existence should the need arise.
