Recovery of Nickel from Filter Cake (RECONIF)
RECONIF is a new research and development project funded by the EPSRC / Technology Strategy Board (TSB) bringing together Industrial SME's with the Universities and commercial research providers. The project is focussed on recovering heavy metals such as Nickel from domestic battery waste. This can be very difficult with conventional approaches but with Dr Ryder and Professor Abbott the University of Leicester will bring new methodologies using environmentally sustainable ionic liquid solvents to extract metals from solid waste instead of strong acids or caustic alkalis. The University of Leicester (Ryder, Abbott) will act as consultant to this new project advising on metal ion chemistry, liquid formulation and metal extraction protocols as well as contributing to scale-up work and the design and construction of pilot plant processes.
