Chris Heaton Retires from Computer Centre
Head of Systems Chris Heaton is retiring from the University after 42 years of service.
Chris Heaton will be taking early retirement from the University in November 2008 after 42 years of service. Chris joined the University in 1966 working as a technician in the Department of Physics. Through part time study he gained a HNC in Applied Physics in 1968 and a BSc in 1976. During the course of his time in Physics he rose to the position of Chief Technician responsible for the provision of student laboratory facilities.
In 1981 the micro-processor ‘revolution’ was just beginning and Chris joined the ‘Computer Laboratory’ as a Micro-electronics Engineer making hardware and software modifications to the microcomputers of the time. He also developed and built various microprocessor based devices for the department. In the early nineties Chris was one of the instigators of the project that originally started Computer Centre networking and file serving for Personal Computers based on Netware. In 1995 Chris took over the position of Head of Systems management and in 1997 was one of the instigators of the project to replace the Netware service with the Windows based CFS service we have today.
Chris has a variety of other interests – Travel, photography, music. Being a keen allotmenteer, he is a member of the Countesthorpe Gardens and Allotments Society committee and manages the CGAS website.
