International Award for Inter-disciplinary Teaching Film
Issued on 17 July 2009
A film produced by ITS-Multimedia Services for teaching health and social care students has won an award in the USA from HeSCA, the Health and Science Communication Association.
The film, ‘Mr Kirby’s Story’ is inspired by the case history of a real patient. The real-life story was anonymised and adapted into a film script by a team led by Sandy Goodyer, including her colleagues from the Department of Medical and Social Care Education at Leicester and from De Montfort University and the University of Northampton.
Divided into a series of short scenes on DVD, the film highlights issues around caring for elderly patients who become too infirm to continue to cope with living independently at home. It focuses on the relationships between care professionals, the patient and the patient’s family. Working to a limited budget, the film was made with the generous help of volunteer actors from the Billesdon Drama Society.
The film is used in inter-disciplinary teaching sessions involving mixed groups from different vocational programmes at the three universities, such as social work, nursing, medical, physiotherapy and occupational therapy students. According to tutors who have used the DVD: “It provides a good grounding for students to discuss issues it raises in the safe environment of the classroom setting”, and “students loved this new dimension of Inter-professional education”.
This is the fourth successive year in which the work of ITS-Multimedia Services has been rewarded with a prize in the HeSCA Media Festival. The two person video team have had a run of success over the past decade, winning national and international prizes for their work each year since 2001.
