Staff and Other Distinctions

Queen’s Birthday Honours List

The following individuals with links to the University were honoured in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours List:

CBE

  • Danny Blanchflower, economist and former member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, B.A. Economics (Leicester), honorary graduate.
  • Mrs Margaret Galliers, Principal, Leicester College (member of CULN).
  • Peter Williams, Chief Executive of the QAA, member of the University’s administration from 1973 to 1984 and former Secretary of the Medical School.

MBE

  • Councillor Manjula Sood, former Lord Mayor of Leicester, PGCE (Leicester) and honorary graduate.
  • Dr Shobha Das (Associate Tutor and Visiting Lecturer, Department of Media and Communications) – awarded for services to community relations in Bristol.
  • Mrs Marion Grace Plant, Principal and Chief Executive, North Warwickshire and Hinckley College (member of CULN).

Staff and other distinctions

  • The Vice-Chancellor has been invited to serve for a further two years as Chairman of UCAS. He has also been invited to be a member of a review body examining HEFCE’s efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Professor Mads Andenas (Law) has been appointed a member of the United Nations Working Group on Discretionary Detentions.
  • Sue Banbury (Estates) has been elected to the role of Deputy President of the Insurance Institute of Leicester for 2009/10, and is due to serve as President in 2010/11.
  • Dr Jim Broderick (Institute of Lifelong Learning) has been appointed a member of the Expert Panel for the Fire and Resilience Directorate of the Department of Communities of Local Government.
  • Professor Ray Bull and Dr Coral Dando (Psychology) have received respectively the Senior Academic Award and the Junior Academic Award from the International Investigative Interviewing Research Group at its annual meeting.
  • Dr Lex Comber and Professor Peter Fisher (Geography) will be keynote speakers at the 2009 International Symposium on Spatial Data Quality in Newfoundland, Canada.
  • Dr Richard England (Geology) has been appointed to the European Science Foundation peer review panel for 2009/10.
  • Ms Rose Griffiths (Education) has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy, the sixth such award to be made to the University.
  • Professor Mike Lovell (Geology) has been appointed to the Committee of Heads of University Geoscience Departments. He has also been appointed by the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts, based in Houston USA, to a five-year position on the Board of Directors of the SPWLA Foundation, which awards Scholarships and Grants.
  • Professor Karl Nicholson (Infection, Immunity and Inflammation) has been personally commended by Professor Dame Sally Davies, Director General of Research and Development and Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and NHS, and Professor Sir Gordon Duff, Chair of the Department of Health's Scientific Advisory Group on Pandemic Influenza, for his immensely valuable contribution to the national efforts that are being made to respond to swine influenza.
  • Professor Gilly Salmon (Beyond Distance) has been successful in obtaining UNIQUe accreditation for e-learning quality.
  • Professor Bob Warwick (Physics and Astronomy) has been invited to serve on the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Particle Physics, Astronomy and Nuclear Physics Science Committee.

Student distinctions

  • Jim Davies (Ph.D. student, Law) has been awarded a Modern Law Review Scholarship and has recently presented papers at seminars in Helsinki and at the EUI in Florence.
  • Melissa Maharaj (LL.B. 2), who is a part-time Community Warden, has won two Police Awards, the Certificate of Recognition awarded by the Neighbourhood Policing Team for services to the Team, and the Delivering Service Excellence Award given by the Joint Action Group for services to fellow students.
  • Ross Morrison (Ph.D. student, Geography) has been awarded one of only two Bert Tanner Scholarships to enable him to attend a two week Advanced Modelling Course at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station.

The following Geology students have received external funding to support field and analytical work:

  • David Riley (Ph.D. student) - £513.00 from the Timothy Jefferson Field Research Fund for field work in Herefordshire.
  • Ben Ellis (Ph.D. student) - £920 from the Geological Society W G Fearnside Fund.
  • Sophie Fielder (M.Geol. 3) - $2000 student research grant from the Society of Economic Geologists’ Hugh E. McKinstry Fund.
