Staff and other distinctions

  • Professor Heiko Balzter (Geography) has been invited to serve on the recently-formed Gold Working Group on Biomass, and on the European Science Foundation’s European Space Sciences Committee.
  • Mr Matt Barker (Technician, Cell Physiology and Pharmacology) has been awarded second prize for his poster presentation at the recent Dublin Physiological Society Meeting.
  • Dr Juan-Carlos Berrio (Geography) has been appointed a member of the Paleoclimate Commission of the International Union for Quaternary Research.
  • Professor David Bonner (Law) has been appointed a member of the Independent Scrutiny Group advising the Chair of the Government’s Review of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
  • Professor Richard Bonney (Emeritus Professor, Historical Studies) has been appointed as Professorial Research Fellow in South Asian Security by the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies.
  • Mr Matthew Bown (Cardiovascular Sciences) has been awarded a HEFCE-NHS Clinical Senior Lectureship Award.
  • Professor Bill Brock (Emeritus Professor, Historical Studies) has been nominated for the Roy G. Neville Prize in Bibliography or Biography for 2009 by the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, for his biography entitled William Crooks (1832-1919) and the Commercialism of Science.
  • Professor David Evans (Cardiovascular Sciences) has been appointed as Honorary Secretary of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.
  • Professor Colin Haselgrove (Archaeology and Ancient History) has been elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
  • Professor Norman Housley (Historical Studies) has been elected to the Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea), which is a group of 2,100 academics who are involved in promoting interdisciplinary and international scholarship.
  • Dr Claire Jarvis (Geography) presented a Keynote paper to the International Conference on Applied Geoinformatics in Salzburg in July 2009.
  • Professor Kevin Lee (Pro-Vice-Chancellor) has been made an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences.
  • Professor Mark Lester (Physics and Astronomy) has been appointed a member of the Physics Evaluation Panel for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
  • Professor Elizabeth Murphy (Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Social Science) has been made an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences.
  • Dr John Remedios (Physics and Astronomy) has been invited to join the European Space Agency’s Earth Science Advisory Group.
  • Dr Ludovic Renou (Economics) has been invited to give a presentation at a workshop on Mechanism Design and Computer Science at Princeton University.
  • Professor Gilly Salmon (Beyond Distance Learning) has been invited to join a Task Force, chaired by the Chief Executive of the British Library, which is conducting a strategic review of the potential for the development of on-line HE in the UK.
  • Professor Douglas Tallack (Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Arts, Humanities and Law) has given the annual Grolier Club public lecture in New York City. He has also been invited to join the Executive Council of the International American Studies Association.
  • Dr Nick Tate (Geography) has been appointed GIS section editor for the journal Geography Compass.

Group distinctions

  • Beyond Distance Learning has jointly won the Team Award in the Learning Technologist of the Year competition for 2009 organised by the Association for the Learning Technology.
  • The Conference Service has won the Meeting Industry Marketing Awards in the categories Best PR Group (Gold) and Best Use of Budget Group (Bronze).
  • The Student Support and Development Services Division has won the Outstanding Support for Students Award at the 2009 THE Awards event on 15 October.

Student distinctions

  • Mr Akan Eka (MBChB 2) has represented Great Britain in the European Karate Championships held in Cordoba, where he reached the semi-finals and his team secured a Bronze Medal.
  • Ms Kate Moore (Ph.D. student Geography) has won the Science and Engineering prize at the University’s Postgraduate Festival of Research for a presentation of her interdisciplinary Ph.D. project.
  • Ms Katherine Nichols (B.A. Geography (Social Sciences) - graduated 2008) has been awarded the Second Prize by the Women and Geography Study Group of the Royal Geographical Society for her undergraduate dissertation.
