We have learnt, with regret, of the death of Mr Lawrence Mefful in Afghanistan. Mr Mefful was a distance learning student on the MSc Security and Risk Management course.

Adrian Beck, Head of the Department of Criminology, said: "The tragic news of the death of Lawrence Mefful, one of our students on the MSc in Security and Risk Management, has deeply shocked all the staff in the Department of Criminology. While Lawrence had only recently begun his studies with the Department, he had already shown a keen interest in, and understanding of, the subject - his first module assignment had received a distinction mark. His sudden death brings home the stark realities of having to manage security and risk in dangerous environments and we are very fortunate that we have people like Lawrence who are willing to put themselves in such situations in order to protect the lives of others. Our condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."
