University of Leicester Library appoints Nancy Bayers to the newly created post of Bibliometrician

New appointment will play role in evaluation of the university’s research

The University of Leicester has appointed Nancy Bayers as Bibliometrician in the University Library.

Nancy will be working closely with academic colleagues, Colleges and the Research Support Office, providing expertise on the use of bibliometrics and its use in external and internal evaluation of the quality of the University’s research.

In the past decade, bibliometrics has become a standard tool of research management and has been used to inform peer review in evaluation of papers and researchers. Nancy will be offering bibliometric modelling at the institutional, college, department and individual researcher level to best position and promote the University’s research accomplishments to outside funding agencies, research councils and the international research community. In this role, Nancy will be working to maximize the exposure of the Leicester’s research publications and accomplishments.

Previously Nancy worked for Thomson Reuters in Philadelphia, USA as Manager of the Research Services Group with responsibility for providing bibliometric services and products to academic and government communities worldwide. Nancy has over 15 years’ experience working with universities, government agencies and publishers where she provided expertise on the use of citation analysis for evaluation of research performance. She has been a frequent invited speaker at international conferences providing insights into the use of publication data in research assessment, journal evaluation and identification of emerging trends in science. She has also worked closely with libraries in providing citation data for incorporation into internal management information systems. Nancy holds a Bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Information Science.

The creation of this post, the first of its kind in a UK academic library, is a sign of the Library’s commitment to offering first-class library and information services for the University’s researchers, working closely with the academic colleagues and the Research Support Office.
