Museum Studies at University of Leicester wins national award

‘World leader in museum industry’ recognised

Issued on 18 June 2010

The University of Leicester picked up another glittering award at an national event in Mayfair last night – winning an award for its renowned School of Museum Studies.

The School is already recognised for housing the greatest concentration of world class research of any department of any discipline in the UK. Now it has won the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for its outstanding departmental administration. The success at the second national awards event came amidst a gathering of over 1000 people from the sector and beyond.

The awards are designed to celebrate the sector's leadership, management, financial and business skills. They showcase the extraordinary innovation, teamwork and commercial acumen of UK higher education institutions.

The citation reads: “The University of Leicester’s School of Museum Studies has become a world leader in the museum industry thanks to its ‘highly engaged and dynamic’ administrative team.”

Judges commended how administrators supported the School’s global reputation with innovation and skill. They highlighted the benefit to students- in particular the jobs desk that last year featured 2,900 jobs in the sector and attracted 250,000 hits.

Praising the overall effectiveness of such a small team, the judges added that they ‘ rated the way the team worked together, involving academic, administrative and technical staff for the benefit of students.’

Leicester has won a clutch of awards from the Times Higher in recent years- including University of the Year (08-09) and Outstanding Support for Students (09-10)

Head of the School of Museum Studies Richard Sandell said: “Our administration team plays a critical role in the School and we are all delighted to have the team’s commitment, innovation and professionalism recognised in this way”
