‘Being British and German: Sir Hubert von Herkomer’s art 1871-1914’

Free public lecture by Dr Matthew Potter on Monday 23 November at the University of Leicester

Dr Matthew Potter will be delivering the final address in this year’s Public Lecture Series organised by the Department of the History of Art and Film at the University of Leicester.

This lecture will explore the problematic nature of national schools of art in the modern period, taking the career of the German-born British painter Hubert von Herkomer as a case study.

Herkomer defied all the odds by negotiating the prejudices of the British and German art worlds. He was decorated by the royal courts of both countires – his status as both British and German tells us much about the way in which Britain thought of itself in a global context.

Dr Potter, lecturer in Art History at the University of Leicester, said:

“We organise this series of lectures annually to give the public and the academic community of Leicester an opportunity to hear a range of leading experts. This year national identity was taken as the core structure: a topic which is relevant to the wider issue of international politics and relations between world cultures in the post 9/11 global situation”.

The lecture is taking place on Monday 23 November at 5.30pm in Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 3 at the University of Leicester.
