International conference to tackle the financial crisis

Policymakers and academics to come together for economic and financial forum

Issued on 07 October 2009

The University of Leicester is hosting a prestigious international economic and financial forum on learning the lessons from the global financial crisis.

The conference on ‘Global trends in the Efficiency and Risk Management of Financial Services and the Financial Crisis’ will take place on 14-15 November, hosted by the University of Leicester’s School of Management’s Efficiency and Productivity Research Unit (EPRU). The conference will address the causes of the financial crisis and look at ways to prevent another.

Following the 2007 financial crisis, academics see the need to address the lack of economic risk management, highlighting a need to improve efficiency within the financial industry. The conference aims to provide a forum for experts to discuss these issues.

Leicester’s EPRU is one of the most prestigious research groups in efficiency and productivity analysis and have invited academic and non-academic experts from across the globe to take part in this two-day event. The conference will feature a number of scheduled talks, with topics including the financial crisis, regulation, risk management and globalisation.

The conference also aims to encourage debate between academics, financial regulators and institutions in the form of round-table meetings with a view to establish a European Network on financial efficiency. The keynote speech will be delivered by Professor Iftekhar Hasan from the Lally School of Management and Technology in the United States.

EPRU co-ordinator, Dr Meryem Duygun Fethi from the University of Leicester’s School of Management said:

“This is a very timely conference that will give market participants and academics the opportunity to meet and discuss the problems that led to the financial crisis and what should be done to avoid similar events in the future. The conference will create a platform for both policymakers and academics to learn from each other and share their knowledge in a very significant time in the aftermath of the crisis.”

In collaboration with UK and European universities, the EPRU plans to launch a research funding bid to continue this timely research as leaders in the field.

Following the conference, selected papers will be published in an edited book and featured in three special issues of highly reputable academic journals.
