The Statesman - Back in the reckoning - Life would have a tough time on Mars. The typical surface temperature of the planet varies from -125° Celsius during winter to 25° Celsius in summer. Dr Mark Sims of the University of Leicester says, "Mars was probably very much like the earth soon after it formed 4.5 billion years ago. For the first 500 million years, there was probably substantial amounts of water on the surface, but it is no longer present." Mars' atmospheric surface pressure will have also been
