Dr Engelbert Humperdinck's Address

Address by Dr Engelbert Humperdinck on the occasion of being awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music by the University of Leicester 27/01/06

I thank the University for this great honour and the public orator for the kind things he has said.

My special congratulations to Sir Peter Williams, the University’s new Chancellor.

I have performed on this stage many times in the past but today is a very proud moment in my life.

It gives me a thrill as an entertainer to be honoured by the University of Leicester in my home town.

I am delighted to be sharing this special day with all graduands, your families and your friends.

You must all be delighted with your achievements.

We will remember this day with pride and very happy memories.

A special word of congratulations to my fellow honorary graduand, Rev Alan Race.

I would further like to thank the University for recognising the 40 years I have spent within the music industry, and the charitable contributions made, and intend to continue to make.

My fans around the world will be delighted to learn I am receiving this prestigious honour and recognition from the city to which I frequently return, to visit my family, my home and my friends.

Do you know, it would be easier for me to sing this!

Should I now swap the microphone for the conductor’s baton?

As an entertainer I will always be Engelbert Humperdinck.

To the citizens of this city I will proudly remain a son of Leicester.

Thank you.
