'The hierarchical structure of biomolecules is key to their functioning: a journey into the field of structural biology' - 14/02/2012 17:30

An inaugural lecture hosted by Professor Geerten Vuister

On Tuesday 14 February, Professor Geerten Vuister of the Department of Biochemistry will give his inaugural lecture the entitled 'The hierarchical structure of biomolecules is key to their functioning: a journey into the field of structural biology'. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Vuister said: "The lecture will take you on a journey into the field of Structural Biology with an eye for the historical perspective. Starting from basic concepts, I will explore the consequences for the functioning of biomolecules in the biological processes. This journey will raise fundamental questions as to what constitutes knowledge and how we can assess the correctness of our experimental results. Finally, I will try to assess the challenges for the future of Structural Biology, as field of science."

Prof. Geerten W. Vuister studied physical chemistry (University of Groningen, 1987) and obtained his Ph.D. cum laude (Utrecht University, 1991). After a post-doctoral period at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA), he received a young investigator award of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (1994) and was appointed assistant professor at Utrecht University. In 1997 he became an associate professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen and was promoted to full professor in 2008. In 2011 he moved to the University of Leicester were he holds a chair in structural biology. Vuister’s research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications.

It will be held at 5.30pm in Lecture Theatre 1 in the Ken Edwards Building.

A reception will follow at 6.30pm in the Park Side Lounge on the fifth floor of the Charles Wilson Building. For more information or to confirm your attendance, please contact inaugural@le.ac.uk.
