Workshop on Transitions: Managing, participating and challenging - 05/02/2010 10:30
The workshop begins at 10.30am on Friday 5th February 2010 in the Belvoir Park Lounge, Second Floor Charles Wilson Building at the University of Leicester.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together a diverse range of approaches to 'transition' and discuss issues of managing, participating and challenging these different forms of transition. This is deliberately broad to include issues of sustainability but not be confined by them. Indeed geographers have discussed transitions in many contexts. These include the management and planning of various processes of socio-technical transitions; the legacies of post-socialist transitions; young people's transitions to adulthood; and the experiences of transexual people 'transitioning' from one gender identity to another.
Transition as a concept, practice and experience has received increased attention by academics, activists and policy makers. However, how can we, or should we, manage the variety of transitions we are experiencing in ways which enable them to be more inclusive?
The workshop will start at 10.30am and finish by 5 pm (with an optional meal afterwards).
Workshop format:
The day will begin with talks from two key speakers:
- Dr Helen Jarvis (Newcastle University) on 'Transitions to collaboration: housing for social reproduction'
- Dr Tim Foxon (Leeds University) on 'Transition pathways to a low carbon energy future: Can civil society lead a transition?'
This will be followed by a panel discussion structured around the issue of inclusive transitions with Dr Peter North (Liverpool University), Dr Gill Seyfang (University of East Anglia) [invited], and Dr Andrew Reeves (Transitions Leicester).
It is intended that plenty of time will be available for discussion throughout the day, but the workshop will also end with an open discussion session.
There is no charge for the seminar or for refreshment, but participants must book a place in advance and are expected to meet their own costs. A limited number of travel/accommodation bursaries are, however, available for low waged / unwaged participants. To request a bursary please email Jenny Pickerill (j.pickerill@le.ac.uk), with estimated costs of travel and/ or accommodation, specify your status and (briefly) outline the reasons for your request.
Booking is now available for the seminar and workshop. To book a place please contact Jenny Pickerill (j.pickerill@le.ac.uk) or Gavin Brown (gpb10@le.ac.uk).
