Appointment of Chancellor

Sir Peter Williams to step down in July 2010

The University is currently engaged in the process of identifying possible candidates to replace Sir Peter Williams as its Chancellor. Sir Peter will stand down from the role, which he has filled with distinction since 2005, after this summer’s degree ceremonies.

The Chancellor is elected by Court on the nomination of the Council, and the Nominations Committee is responsible for making a recommendation to Council on the appointment. The Committee is very keen to receive suggestions from members of the University community for the appointment of Sir Peter’s successor.

The Chancellor is the formal Head of the University, and is Chair of the Court and a member of the University Council, although does not usually attend Council meetings. The Chancellor presides at degree ceremonies and other formal occasions, but also has a wider role in representing the University to the world at large. The Chancellor should be an individual with whom staff, students, alumni and the wider community can identify, and who in turn can be identified with the University of Leicester.

The University is therefore looking for a Chancellor with an established and respected national profile, a commitment to higher education and to the University, and with the time and energy to fulfil the role.

Suggestions for the appointment of the Chancellor should be sent to Neil Cox, Principal Assistant Registrar, Academic and Research Services (nac1@le.ac.uk), by 26 February 2010. All names will remain confidential, and it is essential that no prior approach is made to any persons who might be suggested. The Nominations Committee will make the necessary approach in the event of a suggestion being taken forward.
