How to update the image slideshow

The image slideshow works in a different way than the scrolling news, but all content required to update the slideshow still lives in Plone. The slideshow is made up of images (as either JPG or PNG)  and an XML file. The XML file tells the browser which slides to play and for how long.

- Each image in the slideshow should be 1140 pixels wide by 820 pixel high
- The slideshow will take 5 minutes to update on the digital signage screen.
- The slideshow will automatically refresh every 5 minutes

Upload a new image

  1. Navigate to the following address  www2.le.ac.uk/digitalsignage/slideshow
  2. Select your department from the list
  3. Login to Plone
  4. Click on the images folder
  5. Select Add new and then choose Image.
  6. In the image field browse to the image you want to upload from your computer and click open. It is best to not include capital letters or spaces within the file name of your image. Also try to keep the filename as short as possible.
  7. Do not complete the title field or else the file extension (.jpg) will be lost
  8. Click save to upload the image
  9. Next change the state from Private (in red text) to Publish

Edit the slideshow

First download the XML file:

  1. Navigate to the following address www2.le.ac.uk/digitalsignage/slideshow
  2. Select your department from the list
  3. Login to Plone
  4. Click on rotator.xml (blue link) to view the file, then click on rotator.xml link at the top of the page to download the file
  5. Select save, and then choose somewhere to store the file, for example on the X drive

Once you’ve downloaded the XML file you won’t need to repeat this step. If there are multiple people editing the XML file then you should save this file at a location where multiple people can edit it e.g. the X drive

Edit the XML document to insert a new slide and upload back to Plone

  1. Open up rotator.xml in Notepad
  2. Copy and paste the code for an existing slide to create a new slide. Each slide will start <slide slideshowDelay="8000"> and end with </slide> Once you've duplicated an existing slide change the file name to the new image you've created and uploaded
  3. Save rotator.xml and upload this back into Plone. The quickest way to do this is to click on the rotator.xml link within your departments slideshow folder in Plone. At this point you should now be able to see a black and white version of the file. To replace this version with your new version just click on the green edit button.
  4. Next click on the radio button for 'Replace with new file'
  5. Then click on the button to find rotator.xml on your computer
  6. Once you've found the file click the save button to upload the new version of rotator.xml

Edit the XML document to change the amount of time a slide will play for

  • Open up rotator.xml in Notepad
  • The amount of time a slide will play for is measured in milliseconds, 1000 milliseconds is equal to one second
  • Changing  <slide slideshowDelay="8000"> to <slide slideshowDelay="6000"> will change the amount of time a slide plays for from 8 seconds to 6 seconds

Edit the XML document to delete or change the order of slides

  1. Open up rotator.xml in Notepad
  2. To delete a slide follow the instructions above for inserting a new slide but only cut the code for the slide
  3. The slides will play in the order they are listed in the XML document. Just cut and paste the code for each slide (by following the instructions above for inserting a new slide) to change the order.

If you’re replacing an existing image/slide then you can keep the image file name the same as the existing image, this would mean not having to change the image file name in the XML document. You only need to edit the XML document when changing the number of slides playing.
