Interdisciplinary research and teaching

The Victorian Studies Centre at the University of Leicester has a distinguished record of innovation and excellence in interdisciplinary research and teaching at postgraduate level. Established in 1966 with a generous grant from the Leverhulme Trust, it is the longest established Victorian Studies Centre in Britain.

Please see our Mission Statement.

Internationally renowned staff

The Centre's research and teaching staff are drawn from the College of Arts, Humanities and Law, and comprise members of the School of English, the School of Historical Studies which includes the internationally renowned Centres for Urban History and English Local History, and the Department of History of Art and Film. The centre also has various international links with the National Library of India, Kolkata and the English Department at the Tianjin Normal University, China.

Partnerships

The Victorian Studies Centre works in partnership with a number of external organisations. We have an ongoing association with the Dickens Journal Online, carrying out consecutive blogging projects. We have a strong tradition of collaborative doctoral awards with the Charles Dickens Museum, National Army Museum and Leicester Records Office. Post-Doctoral awards have recently been appointed through the Charles Dickens Museum and Cityread. Members of staff in the centre are also actively involved on the committees of Victorian societies, such as the British Association for Victorian Studies, the British Society for the History of Science, the Midlands Interdisciplinary Victorian Studies Seminar and the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals, and in the editing of online databases such as the SciPer Index.
