Career Opportunities
History is an academic subject which opens up a wide variety of opportunities. Skills which you develop at masters level are particularly in demand by employers because they are of a higher level and readily transferrable to workplace settings. Skills which are in particular demand include:
- critical and analytical skills and problem solving
- ability to work both independently on a large scale project but also able to work as part of a group
- oral and presentation skills
- ability to construct an argument and to communicate this orally and in written form
- use of electronic resources and the management of electronic datasets
- good time management and awareness of the important of deadlines
- negotiating, questioning and summarising skills
Career Prospects
The Centre for Urban History has an outstanding track record for employment of graduates. Many of our students have gone on to work in areas which specifically relate to urban and conservation history, jobs which they would be less likely to have access to without a specialist masters degree. These have included:
- conservation and town planning
- housing management
- heritage and museums
- libraries and archives
- civil service
- researchers
- university lecturers
Further Study
Many of our masters students choose to go on and complete a PhD/ MPhil. If you have successfully completed a masters degree you can continue your studies with us by undertaking a research degree.
