Tim Savage

Tim studied for a BA in History and Ancient History at Leicester University. His background in ancient history proved to be of great benefit to those taking the 'Ancient to Modern' module (now called 'Concepts in Urban History').  He is writing his MA dissertation on historical parades in Warwick and Nottingham between 1900 and the 1950s. He is particularly interested in how history contributes to the construction and representation of local identities. Tim assisted Hannah in making Roey the much acclaimed gin and tonic birthday cake.

Why did you choose the MA in Urban History?

"I wanted to continue study in Leicester after finishing my undergraduate degree and the Urban History MA was the most appealing and exciting option."

How did you find out about the MA?

"My personal tutor suggested I speak to Roey about the MA."

What has been the most interesting aspect of the course and why?

"The fact that all of the modules are potentially inter-related to each other makes thinking in different ways about history very accessible and also incredibly useful. The interdisciplinary factor is also very engrossing."

What has been the most fun aspect of the MA?

"Being able to interact and engage with lecturers on a new level has not only been the most fun aspect but has also helped make the MA more enjoyable generally, particularly Friday trips to the pub after CUH seminars and lunch time in the CUH common room."

What parts of the MA have you enjoyed the least and why?

"Some aspects of the research training were not as enjoyable as the rest of the masters but this is purely because I had already received similar research training in some areas at University of Leicester in my undergraduate degree. Of course, this does not mean I did not enjoy these classes."

Are there any parts of the course which you feel will be of particular use for your future career choice?

"I have not yet decided on a future career choice but one of the (hopefully not misguided) options that would benefit from the Urban History MA would be in town planning. Transferable skills from both 'Historical Research Methods' and 'Knowledge and Methods for Social Scientists' are also invaluable."

What is your most memorable moment at CUH?

"So far, Roey's reaction to Prashant's gift and the constant jokes about Raffles. Swapping internet memes and abbreviations with Matt in the 'Vices and Virtues' module."

Do you have any 'survival' tips for future students?

"Live close to the Centre for Urban History. Do as much reading, background and otherwise as possible in addition to the required reading. Have a sense of humour. Don't be scared."

What's the best cake Roey has cooked this year?

"Banana and walnut by far. Much kudos from me, it is my favourite cake."
