Gary Davies

Gary is a mature student who did his first degree in the Department of Art History and Film at the University of Leicester. He is writing his MA dissertation on the factors behind attempts to contain the urban c.1925-1940, with specific reference to the rural lobby, the urban and town planning lobby and the State's response.

He is applying for funding from the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB) to fund his PhD which will be on Steen Eiler Rasmussen, the Danish architect, architectural historian, urban planner and academic. Gary plans to study for his PhD jointly in the Centre for Urban History and the Department of History of Art and Film.

Why did you choose the MA in Urban History?

"Because I am very interested in urban history and Salisbury Road is a centre of excellence in the subject."

How did you find out about the MA? 

"Originally one my undergraduate lecturers mentioned the MA as being of possible interest. I followed this up on the centre website and a discussion with Roey."

What has been the most interesting aspect of the course and why?

"The varied areas of expertise that has given me the opportunity to expand the narrow area of interest I had at the end of my undergraduate degree."

What has been the most fun aspect of the MA?

"There is an amazing sense of esprit de corps at the centre. It is experienced in the seminars, the common room and the pub on Friday night."

Are there any aspects of the MA which you would like to change?

"I would bring the essays deadlines in the first seminar forward."

Are there any parts of the course which you feel will be of particular use for your future career choice?

"If you are intending to continue in the academic world, the MA is a fabulous springboard."

What is your most memorable moment at CUH?

"I have enjoyed all the aspects of being at the centre and cannot really pick one particular moment."

Do you have any ‘survival’ tips for future students?

"Join in and enjoy a rare opportunity to mix an intense intellectual challenge with a fun and vibrant environment."

What’s the best cake Roey has cooked this year?

"Lemon Drizzle, but Roey’s ‘effing cake’ was remarkable…"
