Research Interests
Current research interests include the main themes of my doctoral work 'Remaking the Victorian County Town 1860-1910' (Centre for Urban History, 2002); county towns, Victorian urbanisation and urban governance. I am a member of the County Towns Research group. Other research interests arising from my doctoral work include the Victorian urban middle class, their occupations and lifestyles, particularly professionals and imperial servants. I am currently researching the settlement patterns and urban impact of returning imperial servants.
Teaching
I teach on a variety of nineteenth-century urban and social topics for several departments:
- School of Historical Studies, various undergraduate teaching particularly the 'Victorian Cities' module.
- Institute of Lifelong Learning, Lecturer on BA Humanities/World Humanities at Vaughan College teaching first and third year courses with my CUH colleague Dr John Smith. I also lecture in Victorian architecture for the Certificate in Architectural History.
- Centre for Urban History, contributor to the summer school programme.
