Careers and Further Study
Like university degrees in most subjects, our BA Sociology degree is 'portable'. Most graduate employers look for students who not only have a good degree from a respectable university but also have a broad range of skills. The reputation of the University, the Department and the degree courses, combined with the transferable skills embedded within, have contributed to the success of our graduates in the labour market.
Over 93% of our graduates quickly find themselves settled in careers, or placed in postgraduate education, shortly after completing their degree. Some of the posts they have recently filled include:
- Secondary School Teacher
- Anti-Social Behaviour Coordinator
- Community Carer
- Educational Assistant
- Sales Manager
- Transport Officer
- Contracts Operations Officer
- Police Officer
Our University Careers Service provides a wealth of information to help students with their career planning. Regular workshops are also held on topics such as applying for jobs, performing well in interviews and creating effective CVs. Individual appointments can also be booked with a careers advisor.
The Sociology department at Leicester provided me with support and guidance throughout all aspects of my studies, encouraging both my educational and personal development.

Having enjoyed studying for a sociology degree at Leicester, I continued my studies in the Department of Sociology, successfully completing an MSc in Social Research. The skills and interests I had already developed during my undergraduate studies meant that the transition into postgraduate education was straightforward. Throughout my time here, the staff here have provided continued support and encouragement, and they played a key in role in securing external funding for my studies.I am currently working towards a PhD, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council, but am still based in the Department of Sociology at Leicester, researching the experiences of families with children who have a rare chromosomal disorder (Prader-Willi Syndrome).
