BA Sociology

The BA Sociology programme is designed as a specialised course that provides a thorough grounding in research methods, theory and a variety of substantive areas. In the first year students study a common syllabus whilst in the second and third years flexibility is introduced in the form of optional modules.

Throughout the course a variety of teaching methods and forms of assessment are employed. The development of transferable skills is encouraged alongside the acquisition of more traditional academic competencies. All students undertake a supervised research project in the third year, allowing them to conduct research in an area of their choice.

How will I be taught?Undergraduate Seminar

Teaching involves lectures and small-group seminars. Undergraduates currently study three modules in each semester. For each module, students normally attend two hours of lectures and a one hour seminar per week. In total, therefore, students are expected to attend approximately nine hours of timetabled teaching per week, with tutorial consultations and private study making up the rest of their timetable.

There are a number of central services provided by the University to support your studies. How will I be assessed?

Summative (or formal) assessment of each module normally takes place at the end of each semester. For each of their three modules, students can expect to submit at least one piece of coursework and to sit one exam. Preparation for summative assessment is through lectures, seminars, tutorials and private study, along with formative (or practice) essays.

Part time study

It is also possible to read for the BA Sociology part time. Please contact the department for further details. [Click on this link for more information on part time fees and funding]
