Why Leicester?
Long Established
The Department of Sociology at the University of Leicester is one of the most prominent and influential in the country. One of the first departments of sociology to be established in Britain, it has a long and well-respected tradition in both teaching and research. There are few branches of the discipline in which it has not had some influence.

The department's graduates have for many years been a major force in the shaping of teaching and research in other universities and colleges. Many of the well-known sociologists in this country have been students and/or teachers at Leicester.
Today the department remains as strong and active as ever, producing high quality research with an international reputation. This ensures that our teaching is informed by cutting-edge research and delivered by academics who are recognised experts in their fields.
Choice, Flexibility and Diversity
The design of our BA Sociology degree ensures that students are offered a high level of choice and flexibility throughout their studies, enabling them to tailor the course to their emerging interests and particular career requirements. During the second and third years students choose six modules from a wide range of topics. The research project, conducted during the third year, is an investigation into a substantive sociological area chosen by the student.
The department provides teaching for students from other departments including Criminology, Media and Communication, Psychology, and Politics and International Relations. Because of this, our students have the opportunity to meet and learn from those with a wide range of academic interests.
Innovative Teaching and Assessment
Students studying sociology are offered a wide range of teaching methods. These include lectures, small group teaching, seminar discussions, individual supervision, student-directed workshops and information and communication technology practicals. Additional one-to-one sessions with teaching staff can be arranged whenever necessary and all staff have regular 'drop in' times when students can see them without an appointment.
Assessment is equally varied ensuring that a wide range of abilities is tested over the course of a three-year degree. While there is still an emphasis on traditional essay writing skills in examinations and some coursework assignments, students are also assessed by way of short-answer questions, portfolios, research projects, journals, presentations and critical reviews.
Friendly, Approachable and Supportive
A small and friendly department, our academic and adminstrative staff are able to get to know students individually. Our staff are approachable and supportive and the Department is sufficiently small and flexible to respond continually to the changing needs of students.
All students have a personal tutor who provides them with support in both academic and other areas throughout their degree. Personal tutors track the progress of students over time and provide stable pastoral support for their tutees.
