Funding
NOTE: Apart from the Alan Powell bursary, the full time PhD scholarship and the Departmental fund for conference and workshop attendance, all sources of funding listed below are not administered by the department but by the University Graduate School or outside bodies. Please ensure that you follow the correct application procedure for each source of funding. The Department cannot answer questions about funding it does not administer.
3 Year Full Time PhD Studentship
The Politics of Immigration: Implications for Social Well-Being and Participation
The Department of Sociology and the Department of Politics and International Relations are pleased to offer a funded studentship for October 2012 entry to their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The studentship will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for three years and include an annual maintenance grant.

Research Areas: We seek applications from excellent students who would like to conduct research on the formation and consequences of immigration and immigration-related policies in the UK and in comparative perspective
Entry Requirements: Applicants must meet the University's standard academic and English language entry requirements. It is expected that applicants will also hold - or expect to hold by October 2012 - a Masters degree in sociology, politics, or a related social science discipline.

Scholarships for international students
The University participates in the ODA Shared Scholarship Scheme for international Masters and PhD students. Information on scholarships for international students from outside the European Union is available in a leaflet which can be obtained from the Graduate School.
Alan Powell bursary
The generosity of the Alan Powell Trust Fund allows the department to give a bursary of £1750 to the best student transferring from APG (probationary) to full PhD status. All students who have had their upgrade approved by 1 September are eligible to be considered for the bursary in that year. All eligible candidates in a given year will be considered automatically and there is no separate application process.
Departmental fund for conference and workshop attendance
The Department has a fund dedicated to supporting our research students to attend workshops and conferences to present their work. Application details are available from the Postgraduate Secretary.
